One reason is the fact that cosmetic procedures are not considered medically necessary and are governed by free markets rather than insurance company or government interference. Cosmetic procedures are broken down into two broad categories:

Surgical

Minimally invasive

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons 2007 study, the latest available, there were almost ten times as many non-surgical cosmetic procedures as surgical ones. The leading minimally invasive procedure is BOTOX® to treat unwanted wrinkles.

ASPS 2007 Figures

BOTOX® popularity has grown phenomenally since it was first approved in 1989 for use in treating muscular eye conditions. At that time, doctors discovered that it helped smooth wrinkles near the injection sites. Although not originally approved for cosmetic purposes, many people started getting BOTOX® treatments for wrinkle reduction.

In 2000 there were 786,911 BOTOX® treatments

In 2006, there were 4,090,517

In 2007, there were 4,625,192

Since the year 2000 there has been an increase of more than 400 percent. The sheer numbers indicate the popularity of BOTOX®.

Reason for Dramatic Increase

The primary reason for the dramatic increase between 2000 and 2006 is the fact that the FDA removed its restriction on marketing BOTOX® for cosmetic reasons. Prior to that, most doctors used BOTOX® off label. While not banned, cosmetic uses for BOTOX® were not specifically recognized by the FDA. In 2002, the ban against advertising BOTOX® for cosmetic reasons caused sales to skyrocket.

As people continue to fight the affects of aging, the popularity of BOTOX® will continue to grow. Clinical testing is constantly performed to find new uses for this and other neurotoxins. If you are interested in finding out more about BOTOX® Cosmetic and how it can help restore your youthful appearance, please contact Dr. Angelchik's Claro Light and Skin Therapeutics™ clinic today to schedule an initial consultation.

Is BOTOX&reg Safe for the Body?

Although rumors about BOTOX® circulate less frequently than they used to when BOTOX® was first introduced, they still need to be dispelled every so often. BOTOX® cosmetic treatment is used by cosmetic surgeons to help smooth the lines of the face and give you a more youthful appearance. BOTOX® blocks the release of acetylcholine that causes muscles to contract, preventing wrinkles at the source.

Approved since 1989 BOTOX®, was originally permitted for treatment of muscles spasms of the eye, called blepharospasms, which is uncontrollable twitching. After many such treatments, physicians noted that the frown line wrinkles between the eyes also grew less while the treatments lasted. BOTOX® soon became a cosmetic treatment to treat wrinkles and today is the most commonly requested cosmetic procedure with more than 4 million treatments per year.

Although BOTOX® is a purified form of botulinum toxin; it is safe for the body when used for cosmetic purposes. As with all medical treatments, certain complications may arise. Some of the complications may include,

Bruising

Infection

Unintended muscle relaxation

Complications like these are minimized when BOTOX® is administered by a trained cosmetic surgeon in an approved setting. So called BOTOX® parties are not regulated or approved and BOTOX® dosing at such parties may exceed FDA recommendations for cosmetic treatments.

BOTOX® is a safe and effective treatment option enjoyed by millions of Americans every year. The few incidents related to BOTOX® are mostly related to other more intensive medical treatments and are very rarely associated with cosmetic uses. But as far back as the late 19th century, women were seeking larger, perkier breasts, and paraffin was one of the first materials used to enhance women's breasts. However, paraffin (commonly used in candle making) caused infections and lumps to form in the patient's breast tissue. Finally, in 1920, using paraffin to augment breast was abandoned, and doctors then began enlarging breasts by using fat from other parts of the body. Unfortunately, however, the fat was reabsorbed into the body and left the breasts asymmetrical. Using fat transfers was also abandoned—around the 1940's.

In the 1950's, another method was attempted: polyvinyl sponges were inserted into the breasts, but this was not successful either as the sponges hardened and shrunk, causing infections. The sponges had been linked to cancer in some women.

In 1961, two plastic surgeons created the first silicone breast implant, and then a few years later, the saline implant was developed in France. Since then, improvements have been made in both saline and silicone implants, but in the early 1990's people began to question the safety and efficacy of silicone implants. In 2006, however, the FDA gave silicone breast implants its full support, and now they’re a very popular choice for cosmetic surgeons all over the world.

If you have been considering breast augmentation and live in the Phoenix area, please contact Arizona cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Paul Angelchik, today to schedule a confidential consultation.

This blog has moved
This blog is now located at http://arizonacosmeticsurgeryprocedures.blogspot.com/.
You will be automatically redirected in 30 seconds, or you may click here.

For feed subscribers, please update your feed subscriptions to
http://arizonacosmeticsurgeryprocedures.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default.

Am I a Candidate for Breast Lift?

There are several conditions that can cause a woman's once perky breasts to begin sagging. Many of these are normal life circumstances, such as pregnancy, weight loss, and aging. Some women with larger, heavier breasts find that gravity works against them at a younger age. A candidate for a breast lift (aka mastopexy) is any woman whose breasts have developed ptosis (sagging) to any degree that is causing her discomfort, either physically or with her appearance.

Candidates for breast lift surgery may also be candidates for breast augmentation. A skilled plastic surgeon, such as Dr. Paul Angelchik, would discuss the various options with you and help you determine which would give you the best results.

Breast health before surgery is an important factor in deciding whether you are a candidate for a breast lift. Maintaining breast health after surgery is always important and should include regular mammograms, an important step to prevent cancer. The state of your health in general is a major consideration for breast lift or any surgery. Dr. Angelchik also requires that his patients be non-smokers, or quit smoking, as smoking increases the risk of unsatisfactory results.

One of the most important qualifications is age. Unless extreme circumstances or serious congenital deformity warrants surgery at a younger age, the FDA recommends breast surgeries be done only after your breast development is completed, or you have reached age 18.

For more information about breast lift surgery, or to schedule a personalized consultation please contact Dr. Paul Angelchik, Arizona cosmetic surgeon, or call 602-375-8888.

Scarring After Breast Lift Surgery

Women are naturally concerned about scarring resulting from plastic surgery, which is understandable. When you go out of your way to improve your appearance, you don't want to mar it with scars at the same time. Yet, the nature of any surgery includes an incision of one sort or another. And, incisions used in breast lift procedures, as in any others, tend to leave scars.

The good news is that the techniques developed for breast lift surgery place incisions where they are least likely to be seen. Most scars eventually fade and are minimally visible in most patients. Scarring will be in proportion to the type and extent of incisions, which is determined by the degree of lifting necessary. The greater the amount of lift required means the greater the potential for scarring. Procedures that require less lifting will also require limited incision patterns.

Your plastic surgeon can describe the various techniques used for breast lift surgery and which one(s) might give you the best results. If you feel that the breast lift procedure(s) recommended for you might leave more scars than a breast augmentation, that procedure may be an alternative option.

Dr. Paul Angelchik has gained a superior reputation as a skilled plastic surgeon, as you can see by the photos on his website. Most scars are barely visible, if they can be seen, at all.

For more information about breast lift surgery please contact his office to schedule a personal consultation.

Breast Augmentation and Cancer Screening

A study by the Group Health Cooperative, published in JAMA January 28, 2004 indicated that breast implants appear on mammograms as a white area that obliterates the breast tissue. Unable to view the breast tissue, screeners miss 22% more cancers in women with breast implants than in those without them.

While breast implants do "decrease the ability of mammography to detect breast cancer," the same study also found that the tumors discovered in women with implants were, in fact, smaller than those found in women without implants.

Several theories were presented to explain this:

Women with implants may have less breast tissue making detection of a lump easier.

Tumors might be easier to detect because the implant provides a firm platform against which the tumor would be easier to feel.

Women with breast implants are more diligent in checking their breasts than those without implants.

Being more conscious of their bodies, women with implants may seek medical care if they detect even a small change.

Women with implants are encouraged to have regular mammograms, and to request one if they detect any abnormality. Seek out a facility that is experienced in using the implant displacement view. This technique moves the implant aside to get a clear view of the breast tissue.

For more information about these issues please contact Phoenix plastic surgeon, Dr. Paul Angelchik to schedule a personalized consultation.

Breast Augmentation and Breastfeeding

Breast milk is the perfect baby food, and breast-feeding the ideal way for mother and child to bond. If you plan to breastfeed after having a breast augmentation, be sure you let your cosmetic surgeon know your intent, as it will help him plan implant options that will give you the best outcome.

If you are concerned about your ability to breastfeed after having a breast augmentation, Dr. Paul Angelchik, Phoenix plastic surgeon, can advise you regarding this much-debated topic. The percentage of women choosing to breast feed after augmentation who can breast feed is in line with the percentage of women, in general, who can breast feed.

One of the risks of surgery, regardless of technique is losing the ability to breast feed because of damage to nerves providing sensation to the nipple area. Although there have been studies to suggest otherwise, in Dr. Angelchik's experience, a periareolar incision does not lead to more numbness if the dissection to create the pocket is done properly. Most numbness is related to pocket dissection, nerve location, and implant size issues, not the location of the incision.

No doubt you have many other questions, and will be happy to know that Dr. Paul Angelchik is happy to give you whatever answers you need. Please contact him to make an appointment for a personal consultation in Phoenix, Glendale or Scottsdale.

Breast Augmentation and Pregnancy

Many women are unhappy with the changes their bodies made during pregnancy, and want their breasts to look as they did before their pregnancies. These women will be happy to know that "mommy makeovers" are designed to do just that.

Other women of childbearing age are concerned about how breast augmentation will affect future pregnancies, or how pregnancy will affect their prior breast augmentation. The encouraging news is that breast augmentation and pregnancy are safe for both mother and baby.

While breast augmentation has no effect on pregnancy, the changes to a woman's body during pregnancy can affect breasts that have been augmented in the same ways as pregnancy affects natural breasts. Normally, a woman's breasts enlarge during pregnancy, stretching the skin and tissues, and resulting in sagging after the pregnancy. The same can happen after a breast augmentation, losing the shape of the original procedure.

For a personal consultation, or to get answers to your questions, please contact Dr. Paul Angelchik through his website to ask questions, or complete the form to schedule an appointment.

Implant Size and Cup Size

One of the major aspects of your breast implant evaluation will be to determine the right breast implant size to achieve the cup size that you desire. Choosing your breast implant size isn’t as simple as picking a “C-size” cup implant to achieve a “C” cup breast size. Choosing the right implant for a breast augmentation requires the expertise of an experienced plastic surgeon.

Because many measurements, health and lifestyle factors are evaluated to determine the ideal implant and cup size for you, you’ll be glad to know that one of the most skilled and qualified plastic surgeons, Dr. Paul Angelchik has several locations in Arizona.

He will show you actual pictures to get an idea of your desired results, but bear in mind that if your body shape differs from the one in the photo, the results will not look the same on you.

Several methods along the lines of the “rice test” have been used to get an idea of the desired implant size. These techniques involve padding your bra with baggies or stockings filled with rice, couscous, or another grain.

The more accurate implant sizers are designed to give you a better idea of what your actual implant will look like. You can wear these for several days, trying different sizes or shapes to see how they look under your clothing, and how each particular contour might feel.

Please contact Dr. Angelchik to schedule a consultation and to learn how to choose the right breast size for you.

What is the Best Age for Breast Augmentation?

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) adopted a policy in 2004 in line with the FDA approval of using saline filled breast implants for women aged 18 years and older. The guidelines further suggest that you be 21 years of age to receive silicone implants. Dr. Paul Angelchik is among the most ethical plastic surgeons. His patients' testimonials confirm that he makes sure that the implants are the best size for his patients and maintains standards to safeguard other aspects of his patients' health and well being.

While only 4% of all cosmetic surgical procedures are performed on people 18 years old and younger, the ASPS emphasizes that the breast augmentation patient be mature enough to make an informed decision and is able to handle the emotional and physical aspects of surgery. Physical maturity and complete breast development are essential because if breasts continue to develop after augmentation, the final appearance of the breasts will be affected.

A factor to consider when contemplating breast augmentation is whether you want to have more children as pregnancy and nursing can alter the shape of your breasts. Depending upon genetics, weight stability, health, diet, skin care and other factors, some women may develop ptosis, or sagging breasts as early as their 20s, and others later in life.

Please contact Phoenix cosmetic surgeon Dr. Paul Angelchik to schedule a personal consultation.

Breast Augmentation for Correction of Asymmetry

Women's breasts naturally differ slightly, usually less than bra cup size. Some women tend to be very aware of asymmetries in their breasts and are bothered more than others by these normal differences. But when the breast asymmetry is greater than a bra cup size, or the nipple or breast position are clearly different when standing up, or the breasts are different shapes, you might want to consider breast augmentation for correction of breast asymmetry.

Breast asymmetry can occur naturally, or can be the result of breast conserving surgery. Regardless of the cause, if this seriously affects your self-image, you'll be encouraged to know that procedures, such as breast augmentation or breast reduction, depending upon which breast you want to match, can resolve your concerns. Another option would be to have both breasts augmented or reduced if you aren't happy with the natural size or shape of either.

Unless breast asymmetry is a significant cause of emotional distress, most surgeons will ask a patient to wait until they are about 21 years of age, or at least four years after the onset of menstruation to have surgery, to ensure that breasts have completed their natural development. Breast augmentation to correct asymmetry is a safe option, but one that deserves thorough research.

If you would like to learn more, please contact Phoenix cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Paul Angelchik for a consultation.

Breast Health Before and After Surgery

Protecting skin elasticity is one of the most effective ways of keeping your breasts in good shape. Among the several things you can do to maintain breast health before and after surgery, you can maintain skin by using sunscreen and quality, medical-grade lotions. Our Claro Light and Skin Therapeutics™ were designed for women who want better results from their surgery, as well as for women who aren’t ready for surgery and prefer non-invasive treatments.

Suggestions for good health for your breasts (and for your body, in general):

• Maintain a consistent weight so that your skin doesn’t stretch, then sag after you lose weight.
• Avoid smoking as it is not just hard on your lungs; it can cause your breasts to sag much earlier in life and can impede healing after surgery.
• Get fitted for bras that are appropriate to your breast size, shape, weight and activities. The right bra will reduce stretching your ligaments during exercise.

As always, regular mammograms and breast exams are important. This is as true after surgery as it was before surgery. In fact, detecting a lump can be easier after some surgeries, such as a breast augmentation.

Please contact Dr. Paul Angelchik, Phoenix cosmetic surgeon, for more information or to schedule a consultation.

Choosing the Right Breast Augmentation Plastic Surgeon

When choosing a plastic surgeon for breast augmentation, there are quite a few things to take into consideration. You will want to know about the surgeon’s skills, experience, and credentials.

You should see more than one surgeon in consultation before making your decision. Ask questions and take notes. Bring photos of what you expect your results to look like from either magazines or websites. If the surgeon does not approve of these methods, go on to the next surgeon on your list. A really confident surgeon will be pleased with your research attempts and be very willing to assist you.

Is the surgeon board certified in plastic surgery? Being board certified indicates the surgeon has completed extensive specialized training that reveals superior knowledge, experience and a commitment to excellence.

Your surgeon should have experience in the procedure you are having performed and his support staff should be well qualified also. In 1992, breast augmentation surgical procedures ranked number six.

Surgery for breast augmentation reaches back over one hundred years, but it was not until the 1960’s that breast augmentation procedures began to resemble the procedures in use today. During the early days of breast enhancement surgery a variety of different materials were implemented to enhance the breasts.

The introduction of silicone is considered crucial to the history of breast augmentation. Silicone was both aesthetically appealing and one of the most debated materials used in the history of breast augmentation. The early use of silicone injections caused numerous health problems and was eventually banned in the United States.

The modern history of breast augmentation begins in 1962 when silicone implants were introduced. For the very first time, a silicone implant filled with silicone gel was used in a breast augmentation surgery. The new silicone implant changed breast augmentation surgery forever. Today, women have the choice of saline or silicone implants.

Breast augmentation has come a long way and shows that women throughout the ages are really not that different. The desire for a beautiful body transcends time and cultures. If you are contemplating breast enhancement surgery, you should learn all you can about this procedure so you can have confidence in your decision.

If you would like to learn more about breast augmentation, and you live in Phoenix, Arizona or the surrounding area, please contact Arizona breast augmentation surgeon Paul Angelchik, M.D. today to find out all about this procedure.

Breast Augmentation Implants: Saline or Silicone?

When it comes to breast augmentation, you have two choices when it comes to the type of substance used to fill your implants: saline and silicone. (All breast implants have a silicone rubber outer shell or bag.)

The most commonly used implant is the saline implant, which is filled with sterile salt water. Silicone implants are filled with a soft, elastic gel.

Advantages of Saline Implants

• Can be filled during surgery where minor modifications can be made.
• Requires only a small incision if filled during surgery.
• If a leak occurs, the saline is quickly and safely absorbed in the body.
• Low rate of infection.
• No restrictions on use, compared to silicone implants.

Advantages of Silicone Implants

• Thicker consistency of silicone means a lower incidence of rippling of the implant compared to saline.
• Can provide a more natural feel to the touch than saline.

Of course, the selection of a type of implant, as well as the size of breast implant, are things that you and your experienced breast implant surgeon will want to discuss at length together to determine the right choice for your specific situation.

Considering breast implants? But here, I’ve outlined a few points to consider:

The action of reaching across the chest, as needed in sports like tennis and golf, can be slightly impacted. The larger your breast implants, the greater the possibility of this concern.

Your arms’ range of motion could be affected in some cases, giving you the feeling that the implants are “in your way,” while exercising. This is usually an early sensation, and you will adapt.

With breast augmentation, you are adding a bit of weight to your breasts, which you may notice in high-impact activities like jogging. A proper exercise support bra can help.

Professional swimmers may experience slightly increased drag in the water.

You may experience temporary overall muscle weakness, especially in the upper body, while your body heals from the surgery.

Overall, breast augmentation should not affect your physical activities in any major way once you have healed. To improve your odds of having trouble-free healing, find an experienced and knowledgeable cosmetic surgeon.

In the Phoenix area of Arizona, please contact the highly skilled breast augmentation surgeon, Dr. Paul Angelchik at (602) 375-8888.

Types of Breast Augmentation Incisions

The decision regarding where to have your breast augmentation surgery incision placed is one that you and your experienced cosmetic surgeon will make together. Here are the four types of breast augmentation incisions generally used:

Inframammary – This common type of incision is made underneath the breast, where the crease naturally conceals the scar.

Transaxillary – Another popular choice, this type of incision is made within the armpit, meaning there is no scarring of the breast. This option cannot be used with silicone implants.

Periareolar – This type of incision is also widely used. It is made around the nipple, along the lower edge of the areola. The tiny scar is easily concealed in this highly pigmented area of skin. If you are having a breast lift along with your breast augmentation, this is often a preferred choice.

Transumbilical Augmentation (TUBA) – This new type of incision is made in the navel (implants are placed using an endoscope). The scar from this incision is quite small, and of course, leaves the breasts scar-free. Only saline breast implants can be used for this type of incision.

If you have additional questions about breast implants or incisions, please contact the office of Phoenix breast augmentation specialist and cosmetic surgeon Dr. Paul Angelchik at (602) 375-8888.

Are You a Good Candidate for Breast Augmentation?

What are the factors that make up a good candidate for breast augmentation surgery? Here are the three most important factors to consider if you’ve been thinking about breast implants:

Are you at least 18 years old (or 21 years old for silicone implants)?

Are you in good overall health?

Are you a non-smoker?

Is your weight stable?

Do you believe your breasts are too small and that larger breasts would improve your self-confidence?

Do you feel self-conscious about one breast being noticeably smaller than the other?

Has having children or losing weight altered your breasts in a way you are not comfortable with?

Do you have problem finding clothes that fit well because of a too-small bust compared to your hips?

If you answered yes to the first four questions, and any number of additional questions, you may be a good candidate for breast augmentation.

Another key factor in the overall success of any breast augmentation surgery is a patient who has realistic expectations.

If you would like to discuss this topic more, please contact one of the Phoenix area’s most respected breast augmentation surgeons, Dr. Paul Angelchik at (602) 375-8888.

Breast Augmentation Recovery Time

Recovery from breast augmentation surgery will be different for every patient. But in general, this type of surgery requires four to six weeks for complete recovery. Here are a few other points to keep in mind:

• A majority of breast augmentation patients are able to perform light activities the day after surgery and can return to driving within four days.
• Your breast augmentation cosmetic surgeon will instruct you on when you can remove bandages, but usually that is within several days.
• You should be able to return to work within one week.
• You should refrain from strenuous activity or heavy lifting for four to six weeks after the surgery.
• Discomfort and soreness is to be expected, especially in the first and second week, and prescription pain medication can help with that. You may also be prescribed an antibiotic.
• Some bruising and swelling is also normal.
• Your breasts at first will feel firm and tender, but will soften over time.

It is important to remember that breast augmentation is, after all, a surgery, and recovery and healing will take time. It’s also key to follow all of the instructions given to you by your surgeon as directed.

If you think breast augmentation might be in your future, please contact Phoenix breast augmentation surgeon Dr. Paul Angelchik at (602) 375-8888.

What to Expect During a Breast Augmentation Procedure

In most cases, breast augmentation surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure, which does not require an overnight stay in a hospital. General anesthesia s typically used, so you feel no pain during the procedure. The surgery itself lasts from one to two hours.

Here’s a brief outline of what happens during the surgery:
• Small incisions are made, and implants are inserted either on top or behind the pectoral muscle. (Read more about the types of incisions used.)
• If your implants are saline-based, your surgeon will fill the implants at this point.
• The incisions are sealed with sutures that your body will eventually absorb.
• Once the surgery is complete, you will be monitored in a separate recovery area, staffed with qualified nurses.
• You will have surgical bandages, or a surgical bra, applied to your breasts when you wake up from the surgery.
• Your breasts will be quite sore and tender, and swelling should be expected for a week or more after surgery.

You should be able to return to work within a few days. In fact, hundreds of thousands of women choose breast augmentation each year as a path to a greatly enhanced self image and increased self-confidence.

Now, a report recently issued by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASPS) confirms that breast augmentation has moved into the number-one spot as the most-opted for cosmetic surgery. The report is based on the numbers of cosmetic surgeries performed in 2008.

Breast augmentation, with its outstanding before-and-after success rates, has surpassed liposuction, which held the highest spot in previous years.

The most sought-after non-surgical procedure, according to the new ASAP statistics, is BOTOX®.

If you’re considering joining the many satisfied breast augmentation patients, please contact Phoenix breast augmentation specialist and cosmetic surgeon Dr. Paul Angelchik at (602) 375-8888. Of course, one reason why the implants were re-approved was that no connection was ever established. Now, a new study gives even more reason to believe in the safety of silicone breast implants. The study shows there is no connection between silicone breast implants and any type of cancer.

The study was published in the International Journal of Cancer's January issue. It was one of the largest and longest every published, following 3486 Swedish and 2736 Danish women who received had received breast augmentation between 1965 and 1993 from the date of their breast augmentation through 2002. The cancer rates for these women were determined and compared to nationwide cancer registries. On average, women in the study were followed for 16.6 years, and some were tracked for 37 years, the entire length of the study from 1965 to 2002.

The study's results showed no significant increase in any cancer due to the women's breast implants. The women actually had lower rates of breast cancer, experiencing only 73% as many cancers as the general population. The study's authors did not present an explanation for this lower incidence. Lung cancer was the only type of cancer that occurred among the women more frequently than in the general population, which the study's authors attributed to a high number of smokers among the study population.

Breast augmentation surgery has actual risks, which you can read about on our breast augmentation questions page. One important factor is considering what types of activities you enjoy on a daily basis. Breast enlargement with implants can give you the bust you want, and need not interfere with your active lifestyle.

In deciding on breast implants, make sure they're not too large for your activity level. What too large means depends on what kinds of activities you enjoy. In tennis, opponents often return balls to the backhand side of larger-chested women, so you should take that possible disadvantage into account. If you are a golfer, you need to be able to keep your long, smooth, uninterrupted swing, so wider implants with less projection might be a better choice. Skiers, on the other hand, can find that wide implants interfere with maneuvering and may want to try higher-profile implants. Finally, swimmers often report that breast implants can increase your drag in the water. Runners are generally not affected too much, but may find the extra weight of a large implant to be a burden, and should definitely wear an appropriate sports bra following surgery.

If your activities depend on your pectoral muscles, you may wish to consider placement over the muscle. This makes the more natural-looking silicone implants a better choice most of the time, especially for women with little natural breast tissue.

In making recommendations to our patients about breast enlargement, we take all factors into account to ensure that women get results that not only look great, but fit in with your personality and lifestyle. To learn more about your options, please schedule a breast enlargement consultation with Phoenix, Arizona plastic surgeon Dr. Paul Angelchik today.

Mommy Makeovers

An article written by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) describes the rapid growth in popularity of cosmetic surgery procedures known collectively as “Mommy Makeovers”. This article says that statistics show an 11% rise in mommy makeovers between 2005 and 2006–more than five times the increase of all cosmetic surgery procedures.

Mommy makeover procedures generally include breast augmentation and lift, and tummy tuck. But other procedures may be added, such as liposuction or lower body lift. Most of those who choose these procedures have hit the wall with diet and exercise, and are not seeing any more improvement from their efforts.

Women claim that the makeover was well worth the time and discomfort, though reports vary on the degree of pain they experienced. As a general rule, they experienced satisfaction with their appearance, more confidence, more motivation to maintain a nice appearance through diet, exercise, dressing better, keeping up their hair and general appearance, felt healthier and more fit, and experienced a better reception from family, friends, people the meet, and those they work with.

The best reason for undergoing these procedures should be personal satisfaction, rather than to please someone else, or to compete with other women. If personal appreciation is not a high priority for you, you may not experience as much satisfaction, because you will always find someone who looks just a little better than you do. Do this for yourself, first.

Business women claim that their appearance is important in their jobs, and the improvement from their mommy makeover has helped improve their success in the business world. People place more trust in people who take care of themselves, and that translates to success in business dealings. This is a good secondary reason, but still insufficient as a primary one, as it leaves a lot of room for dissatisfaction. You want to feel the strength of your attractiveness, not compare it.

Whether you are a stay-at-home mom who wants to look nice for yourself, your husband and family, or a business woman who, in addition to the above, values the benefits of looking your best in the working world, mommy makeovers can be adapted to help you achieve the look that meets your nee

For your personal consultation contact Dr. Paul Angelchik through his website and ask questions or schedule an appointment.

Male Tummy Tuck: A Growing Trend

While there are fewer male than female cosmetic surgery patients, their numbers are growing. Between 2000 and 2007 there was nearly 50% increase in the number of men who had abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck surgery. Men are as concerned about their health, fitness, and appearance as women, but tend to be less outspoken about it.

The tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is one of the more common procedures men have done. The tummy tuck tightens and flattens the abdominal muscles, removes excess fat (liposuction) and trims away extra skin. It is basically the same procedure that women have been having done. Tummy tuck can be combined with other body contouring procedures to fully balance your physique.

There are several options to consider. If you just have a little extra skin and it’s all below the navel level, a mini-tummy tuck should do well. If you have loose skin above the navel as well, then a full or complete tummy tuck is in order. If you have love handles around the sides as well, an extended tummy tuck will get rid of the extra skin and fat there, as well. The result is a nice flat stomach taut skin and a more attractive physique.

Rather than guess which cosmetic surgeries will restore your fit and healthy look, contact Dr. Paul Angelchik to make an appointment for a personal consultation. Like so many others, you’ll find that he gives you the personal attention you deserve.

Mini-Abdominoplasty

Body contouring includes a group of several procedures to reshape the abdomen, breasts, upper arms, thighs, buttocks and hips. These procedures are intended to remove fat and excess skin caused by rapid weight loss, pregnancy, loss of skin elasticity, or aging. Mini-abdominoplasty, a modification of the full abdominoplasty is one of these body contouring procedures.

Mini-abdominoplasty is more commonly called a mini-tummy tuck. It is not as extensive a procedure as a complete, or full, abdominoplasty. The procedure was developed to eliminate excess skin and stubborn fat where the excess was located below the navel.

Advantages of the mini-tummy tuck include the need for only one incision; a smaller scar that heals faster; an easier, faster recovery; and fewer risks of complications.

Tummy tucks, in general are the fifth most common cosmetic surgery procedures according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. The ability to minimize the effects of surgery with the mini-tummy tuck is a great advantage for those patients who don’t have excess skin or fat above the navel.

Contact Dr. Paul Angelchik today to schedule a personal consultation, and find out what a mini-tummy tuck might do for your confidence and overall sense of health and fitness.

Breast Augmentation for Asymmetry

Maybe. Since breast asymmetry can have different causes, and manifest in different ways, there’s no clear yes or no answer to this question. Asymmetry that is limited to a difference in breast size might be fully corrected with augmentation, reduction, or lift procedures. But many patients (men included) have breasts that need more than one type of correction. Congenital abnormalities, variations in growth, or differences due to disease, such as cancer will determine, to a large extent, the exact corrective procedures needed.

Breasts can be tuberous or conical, one of each shape, one larger than the other and both too small or too large. One or both may sag, or nipple placement may be uneven. One common indicator for surgery to correct asymmetry is a difference of one cup-size or greater between breasts. Others include obvious differences in shape from conical to tubular that affect one’s appearance, or their emotional or psychological status.

The need for correction of breast asymmetry can be classified as cosmetic or reconstruction depending upon the degree of difference, or whether there is significant deformity.

To learn more about breast asymmetry, and reconstruction and cosmetic surgery procedures, contact Dr. Paul Angelchik for a consultation.

Breast Augmentation: What’s a Guy to do?

Hmmm, she’s just told you she wants breast augmentation surgery. Don’t underestimate how important it is for the two of you to talk about this and how this affects both of you. As the guy in her life, helping her do some research before her consultation with her cosmetic surgeon will keep both of you well informed and ready to make choices that will satisfy both of you.

Be careful not to rely on what friends say, even if they have had the procedure done, because each procedure is as individual as the patient herself. Attend seminars and research the Internet, especially the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) for reliable information about breast augmentation. As you research cosmetic surgeons help her prepare questions to ask during the consultation appointment.

When you, husband or boyfriend, are involved from the beginning, the experience has better outcomes than when a woman goes-it-alone. The fact is, if you’re intimately involved in her life, this will affect you, and I don’t mean the eye-candy factor. This is surgery, and like most surgery patients, she will undergo a period of recovery, usually thee to six weeks. This is where you will be the biggest help, as she won’t be able to resume any heavy work or lifting for several weeks.

She’ll have to make choices about implant size, placement, texture–things that produce the pleasing outcome for her, and hopefully, for you, too. She’ll need to prepare for surgery, and you can help her get many household tasks out of the way so they won’t need to be done, again, until a week or two after surgery. She’ll need special clothing for planning and for recovery, creams, medications, cooling pads, and other items, someone to make sure they’re cleaned regularly or to replenish supplies of consumables. She’ll need help planning the financing.

Most of all, she’ll need her man to lean on for the help, encouragement and comfort only you can give.

To learn more about breast augmentation and other cosmetic surgery procedures, plan to attend one of our seminars, or contact Dr. Paul Angelchik for a consultation.

Breast Implants: When Size Matters

Yes, it’s true. Size really does matter when you’re having a breast augmentation. In fact, it’s one of the biggest decisions you have to make. One study shows that of the women who underwent re-operation, 34% did so to have a larger size implant. On the other hand, smaller breasts, with a fuller lower pole, balanced with your body size and type, are trendier today. It’s well worth the effort to choose the most flattering size the first time.

Silicone or saline; teardrop or round shaped; high or low profile; sub muscular or sub glandular–how does one choose? One factor is the amount of breast tissue, another the thickness of your skin. As your cosmetic surgeon, I will measure these and other dimensions, and explain the options, and how these will narrow your choices.

Considering how the size of your implant will affect your self-image, confidence, appearance, mental and physical health, try several ways, in cooperation with your cosmetic surgeon, to determine the right size, shape, placement and type of implant. It’s not uncommon for women to discover that the best implant choice is far from what they were led to believe. Height, weight, and body type and shape play a big part in this decision. As well-meaning as friends are, they’ll never know the intimate details of your body the way you and your cosmetic surgeon do. Choosing the best size for you is a unique personal decision.

For answers to any other questions you have about breast augmentation, see our FAQ page or contact us for a consultation.

Breast Augmentation Poses Small Risk

Any type of surgery carries some risk, but is complication-free most of the time. The same thing can be said about the risks with breast augmentation. While the risks are extremely rare, we believe it is in your best interest to understand all there is to know about these risks with whatever procedure you decide to undergo with Dr. Angelchik.

Some of the risks involved with breast augmentation include:

Infection – Dr. Angelchik will give you antibiotics as part of your post-op recovery. If you take them as prescribed, your chances of infection are virtually zero percent.

Anesthesia – Using sedatives or anesthesia is a must with breast augmentation. The risk with anesthesia usually comes in the form of an allergic reaction. If this happens, Dr. Angelchik and his staff will deal with it immediately.

Loss or change in sensation – Some patients may lose sensitivity in their breasts or nipples for a short amount of time after surgery. This may only last six to twelve weeks. However, in very rare instances, this loss is permanent.

Scarring – Scarring is inevitable with breast augmentation. However, these scars will fade after about a year to be hardly noticeable. Some patients who are prone to excessive scarring need to keep this in mind when considering breast augmentation.

Rippling – Saline implants are more prone to rippling than are silicone implants. Those placed behind the muscle, or submuscularly, are less likely to show rippling than those placed in front of the muscle.

Deflation or leaking – If the implant’s shell fails, it can cause leaking of the saline or silicone. Saline is part of the body’s natural makeup, so if your saline implant leaks, it is absorbed into the body. Silicone will stay in the area of the breast and the entire implant will have to be replaced.

Capsular contracture – This is a tightening around the implant caused by scarring that can be uncomfortable or painful. Massaging the implant and taking vitamin E supplement should minimize this effect. Some patients may require corrective surgery if the tightening becomes too much.

If you have any questions about breast augmentation or the risks involved, please contact us to set up an initial consultation.

How to Choose a Plastic Surgeon

Your choice of a plastic surgeon is as important as your decision to undergo any type of elective surgery. Many unlicensed practitioners perform sub-standard procedures in non-clinical settings using fillers that can result in illness, disfigurement and sometimes even death. Some of the substances used in place of tested and approved products are:

Silicone

Baby oil

Cooking oil

Products used in other countries but not approved by our FDA

Some products used by unqualified individuals may be of unknown origin or even illegal. When electing to have any type of procedure done involving the use of fillers, be sure to do your homework and research the background of anyone you are considering for your cosmetic procedure. To read about Dr. Angelchik's background, please see our About Dr. Angelchik page.

There are organizations available to help you determine whether or not someone is qualified to inject fillers into your body. This is different from excessive fat tissue caused by being overweight. The extra tissue is a combination of fat and glandular tissue. The most common cause in younger men is hormonal changes during puberty. In most cases, the condition resolves itself over a two year period without treatment. In other cases, surgical treatment may be necessary.

Gynecomastia may also be caused by:

Benign hormonal changes in the elderly

Dysfunctional endocrine glands

Chromosomal abnormalities

Side effects of certain medications

Certain diseases that affect hormonal balance

Surgical treatment for gynecomastia typically includes excision of breast glandular tissue and liposuction to remove the fat. Excess skin may also be removed in some cases. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia and drains will remain in place for the first few days following surgery.

For six weeks after surgery, you are closely monitored. A compression garment is worn for twenty-four hours a day for the first four weeks. After this time, they are worn only at night for an additional four weeks. Recovery from surgery usually involves only moderate discomfort and patients are prescribed antibiotics and pain medication.

Gynecomastia is not typically dangerous to a patient’s health, although it can be psychologically debilitating for men affected by this condition. We offer different types of liposuction procedures to help you obtain the appearance and feeling of self-confidence you want.

“Tumescent Liposuction” – This procedure injects a diluted saline solution containing lidocaine and epinephrine into the fatty area to be treated. This reduces bleeding and provides increased comfort after the procedure.

PAL (Power Assisted Liposuction) – This procedure uses a power supply to move the cannula, which is a small hollow tube, in an in-and-out motion. This accelerates the procedure and results in enhanced fat removal.

UAL (Ultrasonic Assisted Liposuction) – Fat is liquefied through the use of ultrasonic energy delivered through a cannula. It makes it easier to remove the fat while leaving nerves and blood vessels undisturbed.

Today’s liposuction techniques are safer and more effective, due to advances in technology and patient management. For more information on liposuction, please contact us today to schedule your private consultation.

Under Construction

My Blog is currently under Construction

Please check back soon...
